...or not.

Short version: Newly acquired car lost it's brakes and stalled & refused to start on the way to work today. Guy is giving me a refund once I get it back to his place.

Long Version: Car was sold as rust-free and a good runner with a rebuilt engine, all new brakes, etc. Picked it up yesterday evening and got it home. Later that night went out to futz with it and lifted a section of carpet I hadn't before and found a huge rotted area with multiple holes in the floor. Call guy all pissed and he apologized that he'd forgotten he had planned to fix that. He offered that if I brought it back to him he would fix that part of the floor for free.

This morning went to drive it to work and it was ok for most of the drive, during the short (2-3 mile) highway part the brakes felt a little weird. Got off the highway and it started coughing and bucking. It was low on gas and I thought that might be the problem so pulled int oa gas station & put some gas in. Was still coughing and bucking but I was 2 miles from work so figured if I could get it there I could deal with it after work. Pull to the exit of the gas station and the engine stalled, I hit the brakes because there was cars on the road and there were no brakes. Swerved up onto the sidewalk/flowerbed to avoid hitting anyone. Managed to get it started enough to get it back in the parking lot. called work and said I'd be late, then called AAA. AAA was backed up and had to get a truck from several towns away, which ended up taking about two hours. During this time a guy who works on old dodges happened by and helped me futz with it. We discovered there was no brake fluid in it, and even when I bought & added some there was still no brakes. Also the more I dug around the more issues or shoddy repairs I found. I called the guy I bought it from and left him a rather heated message.
AAA Truck finally showed up and towed me home. We had to drop it on the street as our downstairs neighbor left their car blocking half the driveway. Guy who sold it to me called just as we were unloading it and told me he'd refund my money if I got it to him. Agreed that was for the best and told him I'd call him back. Got it to start so the tow truck left, then it immediately stalled and aside from some coughing & spluttering would not start. I eventually ran the battery down and gave up. Tried to push it off to the side of the road and managed to get one tire jammed against the curb with the ass end still sticking out into traffic. Ended up needing my floor jack and a helpful neighbor's assistance to jack it up & swing it over where it wasn't in the travel lane.

By this time I was overheated, sweaty, greasy, hungry and exhausted and was supposed to have been at work three hours ago. I called work and said I wasn't coming in today(and can't use time off as I need it for a trip in October). I have since showered and eaten and feel more human but am really frustrated by the whole thing.

I'm so sorry you had so much trouble. I'm broken-hearted about all this, but I think you're right -- getting the car back to him is the best option. I'm glad you're showered and fed.

I'm so sorry. it was a lovely visual, but if it was going to be more trouble than it was worth... glad you're unhurt, anyway.
