Sep. 2nd, 2003 09:43 am"Turns out the landlord for the place Velvet and I put a deposit in is not mentally stable.
Well we put a deposit down Sat august 23rd and he said he'd get back to us in four days. the following Friday (6days) We started calling him, it took multiple tries by both of us by I got through to him. At which point it took about 20min of conversation to find out that he hadn't gotten the credit check back (or that he had it at his house), and that he would have an answer for us by sun(8days) (or mon(9days), or tues(10days)), and that we wouldn't be able to move in that weekend (or we would but not til sun, or we wouldn't til tuesday). Talked with Velvet about it, and Sat called the landlord again frokm my mother's place. Had another incoherent conversation in which apparently it was going to take him 2 days to review our credit checks (which may or may not have been in his posession by then) and then he would give us an answer by sun or mon.
About two hours later he called my mom's place back demanding to know why they had called him. When Mom's SO told him he had called he started demanding to know it it was about 'the job'. Finally they got through to him that I had called from there about hte apartment at which point the landlord started mumbling incoherently for several minutes and hung up.
Velvet and I decided this was all a Bad Sign(tm) and decided to ask for our deposit back on mon.
So yesterday (the 1st, 9days)I called the landlord again. Another long rambling conversation ensued. He started once he figured out who I was by yelling at me for 'harrassing him' and told me he would have an answer by tues(10days). When I told him that we no longer wanted the place and wanted our deposit back he kept telling me over and over 'I'll have an answer by tue,' Once I finally beat into his head by sheer repitition that I didn't want an answer but wanted our money back he finally yelled in frustration 'call the other number and leave a message!' Eventually I even got him to tell me what the 'other number' was. At one point during trying to get across to him I wanted our deposit back he said 'I'll send it back however you gave it to me.' To which I replied that I didn't want him sending cash by mail. He then yelled at me 'Well I'm certainly not sending you cash!'
It's freaking scary, and I am half expecting a phone call from him today giving us an answer on the place one way or the other.
One thing Velvet and I have done is a reverse lookup on his phone numberso we have his address so if we don't get word from them in the next few days that they have sent the check we're going to go block his car in with Velvet's old chevy and demand our money back.
So thank god we found out this guy was nuts before we signed a lease, but it is a shame because the apartment was amazing (but now we think we understand why it has been empty for 6 months).
So back to the apartment hunt, Velvet has already found a few more nice places for us to apply for."
