Shopping list
Aug. 20th, 2004 04:35 pm"So our new computers[1] will be here either today or tomorrow. And the Alley Cat is taking Minerva, my old machine. This means we'll have three desktop machines, so our current office setup of one crappy computer desk and one dining room table is no longer sufficient. Instead we're going to build one giant desk into the front bay window wall of the office. This will give us a desk that is at least ten feet wide at the front edge. Plus it'll be almost four feet deep at the deepest point. This'll give us room to put surge protectors, and the towers, and printers and such towards the back to free up more desk frontage. However we already know it is going to be a pretty involved undertaking to build this thing. Here is the shopping list thus far, and it hasn't even gotten past the vague planning stage.
Oye, what have I gotten myself into?"
P.S. on an entirely unrelated note, I just got a spam with the subject 'a vagina-date one today'. *shudder* No thanks, I'd rather date a complete woman, and not just a piece of their genitalia.
[1] Fey and I both ordered new machines through Staples.
- two sheets of plywood these will be our desktop, annoyingly one sheet isn't nearly enough, while two is way too much. Need to get high enough quality ones that it can just be sanded and stained to make a serviceable desktop.
- 2x4s How many is still unknown. Want the nicer finished-carpentry type. Smoother edges, a nicer look, and less likely to weep sap.
- two two-drawer file cabinets these will serve as part of the support for the desk and more importantly as someplace for us to stash our computer crap. edit: turns out the metal one in the basement and the wood one in hte office are the same height, one item down
- two tall CD towers These will be attached to the back edge of the desktop against the wall, so we can finally get all our games/software out of boxes on the floor.
- larger UPS, our current one is tiny and has both full systems run through it, so it's useful only to smooth out the current from our building's old wiring. I'd like one large enough it can keep the systems up for at least 30sec, so that momentary power drops don't shut down all the systems.
- new surge protectors Because it's worth spending $20-40 each to get a new ones to protect our $1200+ in new computers.
