Network Geek question
Jan. 17th, 2006 04:20 pm"We have gotten the DSL turned on in our new place, but have a bit of an issue w/ setting it up.
There is no phone line in the room we want it in, and the nearest jack is far enoug haway we'd need to get the phone company to professionally run a line there. Cost $100-$140.
So we are thinking on wireless. Our current DSL modem (which we had previously hooked into via a cheap router)has wireless capability. The only issue is we'd need to buy wireless cards for both computers, and the signal would have to pass through two walls (one of them formerly an exterior wall).
I have seen wireless cards, and wireless thingies that plug into a USB port. Does anyone have any strong opinions on either of these? Is it likely that we'll be able to pick up a signal through the two walls w/o a problem?
Forthat matter does anyone make a device that picks up a wireless signal, then allows you ot plug multiple computers into it? Basicly acting like a standard wired router, except the router talks to the modem via wireless.
Any info/suggestions appreciated. Modem is the one SBC yahoo gives out with service. The computers are both newish HPs running win XP."

My machine is sitting on my pair of steamer trunks. But it'll do until we get the desk built (supplies already purchased, building still to be done), and wireless ethernet needs to be set up."
