housing fun
Oct. 17th, 2006 09:17 pmSo sometime this morning I was called by a realtor, they wanted permission to stop by this evening and show our building to some prospective buyers. Sometime this afternoon my landlord called to tell me that he was putting the building on the market and some people might want ot look at it in the next few days. Nevermind that I saw him on Monday.
So I have been pondering this since. I've fantasised about buying this building off him in a year or two. But as the current price tag is $279K, that's right out. Plus the more I think about it the less I want to *own* a place in Hartford (property taxes, high insurance, etc.).
But if he is selling the palce it leaves us a bit up in the air. We'd be protected by our lease so we wouldn't have to worry about being kicked out or our rent going up until January. If someone buys it as a rental property we should be just fine. They would be hard pressed to be a less effective landlord than our current one. So assuming they don't suddenly decide that our rent should be a couple hundred higher on Feb 1st we're cool there.
However if someone is looking to buy it to live in, that gets a lot more problematic. Obviously if they want to live in our unit we're come Feb. But if they want to boot out the woamn downstairs that could be nearly as bad. Our current downstairs neighbor is a 98 yr old woman who is nearly deaf, doesn't drive and aside from a tendacy to ahve christian TV a bit too loud during the day is the perfect person to share a building with. If they take her apartment we'll probably have to share the driveway (I won't give up my garage spaces w/o a fight, since they were part of the agreement to rent), and no matter who moves in they will be louder than her.
So things are massively up in the air. And Fey and I are more than a bit annoyed at our landlord for being so crappy about communication. We're tempted to go buy the new stove he said was ok to take out of the rent a few days ago. I don't know if he still wants that expense, but he hasn't communicated to us otherwise.

Oct. 17th, 2006 09:33 pmOh, with all the house stuff I nearly forgot. I managed to snag a cool old metal-clad trunk on the way home from work today. Someone had just left it on the curb for the trash. It is a bit battered, and needs the hinges/latches repaired. But it still has the remains of an old Railway Express shipping label on it.
