I have a favor to ask of my New England friends. Could you keep an eye out for signs like the one above?
One of the things I want to try doing over the coming months is see if I can track down & photograph old caches of Civil Defense shelter supplies. But that requires finding old shelters first, this is where you come in.
If you see one of these signs could you jot down some info for me? I need the address of the building, name of building or company in it, location of the sign, and if it is still there the capacity of the shelter (shown as a number between the two lower triangles). Rough information is totally fine, such as "Citizen's Bank 340's area Main St, Bristol, sign near the side door". I just need enough info to be able to find the building again.
These would be found on buildings from the 1960's and earlier. Buildings made of brick or stone were the most common choices. Best chances are on banks, churches & government buildings.
If you find one, feel free to leave me a comment, or email the info to me. If I find any caches I'll be taking pics and putting them in my flickr stream, and probably posting a link to them in my LJ.
Happy Hunting!
P.S. If you want more info on the old Civil Defense organization & fallout shelters, the Civil Defense Museum is a great place to look. Complete with shelter tours, and info on shelter supplies.
