I am in a weird situation at work right now. First off I am not friends or even acquaintances with any of my co-workers, I work with them and acknowledge their existence enough to accomplish that, but have no further desire to get closer to them.
For the last two days they have been *obsessed* with the woman who answers the phone at the local chinese restaurant. She answers the phone with the name of the restaurant in a way they all apparently find utterly hysterical (I have heard it, aside from a slightly singsong quality it sounds pretty normal). They have been calling just to hear her answer the phone and hanging up, one recorded it and has been passing the sound file around work. They tried calling other chinese restaurants to see if they could find another "funny" answer. They imitate her loudly and repeatedly. Today they talked of calling the place and playing the recording into the phone and hanging up.
This is, unsurprisingly, bugging the crap out of me. But I really don't usefully know what to say. It has been on their private phones so I'm not sure what if anything HR could do, and as a white guy to other white folks I really don't see the "that is racist" conversation going well. Any suggestions or thoughts?
