We went in the basement and flipped the emergency switch for the furnace off and started making irate phone calls.
Landloards are in the basement now, and furnace guys are supposedly on their way.
Now where did I leave those real estate classifieds?..."
EDIT 8:40: Guy is still clanking away in basement and all sorts of petrochemical smells are wafting out of the vents. Italked with him and discovered some interesting stuff. The furnace is the original one for the building, and used to burn COAL. It was converted to oil at some point in the past, and the type of oil burner has also been changed at least one other time. I asked 'So you're saying ti should have been replaced 20 years ago?', he responded with 'Try 40.'
Oh, and the pipe that carries the fumes to the chimney was falling off the back.
